Three seven-night windows over Christmas in Rovaniemi compared: 20–27, 23–30 December and 26 December–2 January, with the shopping and arrival catches.

If you are planning Christmas in Rovaniemi and your apartment search turns up only some dates, the question is rarely “can we stay?” but “which seven nights should we take?” The short answer: for a family with children who want Santa Claus Village, the quiet-but-festive window is usually the nights around 20–27 December, while arriving on 23 or 24 December gives you the most atmosphere and the least flexibility. Check live dates on Airbnb or Booking.com first, then use the guide below to decide which gap in the calendar is actually worth booking.

We are Joona and Alla, the local couple behind Nine Pines. Every autumn we get the same message from groups of six to nine: “We can come 21–28 December, or 23–30 December, or 26 December – 2 January. Which is better?” Here is how we answer.

Why does the choice of seven nights matter so much at Christmas?

Because Rovaniemi does not run on a normal timetable between 24 and 26 December. Finnish Christmas is a family holiday: many shops close early on Christmas Eve and stay closed on Christmas Day, and public transport runs on a reduced holiday schedule. Restaurants that are open tend to be booked well ahead. None of this is a problem in a self-catering apartment, but it changes how you plan a week, and the same seven nights can feel very different depending on where those three days fall.

The other reason is simple supply and demand. Families from many countries pick the same school-holiday weeks, so the dates that feel “obvious” are the ones that disappear first. Seeing a gap in the middle of the calendar is not a warning sign; it usually means someone else’s plans ended on a different day.

Option 1: 20–27 December — the “Santa first, Christmas after” week

You arrive with a few normal shopping days still ahead of you. That means a full supermarket trip on day one, laundry done properly, and the Santa Claus Village visit completed before the holiday closures arrive. You then spend 24–26 December exactly as Finns do: quietly, eating at home, going for a walk in the snow.

This works especially well for a group of eight or nine, because cooking a real Christmas dinner needs space, an oven and a dining table. The kitchen at Nine Pines is equipped for nine, with a dishwasher, oven, microwave, coffee machine and kettle, and a dining table for six (so with nine you eat in two sittings). The downside is that this window is the one most people think of, so it books first.

Option 2: 23–30 December — the “Christmas in the middle” week

This is the dramatic one. You land, settle in and wake up on Christmas Eve in a town that is genuinely hushed. Children often love the atmosphere; adults often love not having to rush anywhere. The catch is a front-loaded shopping problem: you need to buy food for 24, 25 and 26 December in the first afternoon, before closing time on the 23rd or 24th.

If you pick this week, read our guide to buses, shops and apartment life between 20 and 26 December and our Christmas Eve food and shopping notes before you fly. At Nine Pines the nearest groceries are in the neighbourhood (a K-Market and a Sale), which helps when you have forgotten the one thing a recipe needs.

Option 3: 26 December – 2 January — the “Christmas is over, New Year begins” week

You skip the quietest days and arrive as the town starts moving again. Shops are open, the buses are back, and the week ends with New Year’s Eve. This suits groups where the adults want a party-adjacent evening and the children want fireworks they can watch from a window. Remember that quiet hours at Nine Pines run from 22:00 to 07:00 and parties are not allowed, so plan your celebration as a dinner and a walk rather than a gathering. Our New Year’s Eve notes explain what to buy and when.

The trade-off is mood: if what you imagine is “Christmas morning in Lapland”, this week misses it.

How do you compare the three if you have flexible dates?

WindowBest forWatch out for
20–27 DecSanta visit plus a calm family ChristmasBooks first; plan a big shop on day one
23–30 DecChristmas Eve in Rovaniemi itselfShops close early; buy for three days on arrival
26 Dec – 2 JanNew Year and a more “open” townMisses the Christmas hush

Write down three things on one sheet of paper: the earliest arrival your flights allow, the latest departure, and the one day you cannot move (usually 24 December). Then look for any seven-night block that contains that day and fits the flight times. A block that starts on a Sunday is not “worse” than one that starts on a Saturday; what matters is whether your arrival gives you time to shop and settle before the holiday closures.

Prices at Nine Pines are dynamic, so we never quote a fixed nightly rate. Instead, compare the total shown on Airbnb and on Booking.com for the exact dates you want, as described in our guide to comparing total prices.

Does arrival time matter more than arrival date?

Often yes. Check-in at Nine Pines is from 16:00, any time, including late at night, using a code lockbox. The code and a photo guide are sent three days before arrival. A 23:40 landing on 23 December is easy; a 15:30 landing on 24 December means any missing groceries become a problem. If your flight lands late, book the night before rather than hoping the connection holds.

FAQ: Christmas dates in a Rovaniemi apartment

Is seven nights the right length at Christmas?

For most families, yes: it covers the Santa visit, a quiet Christmas stretch and a rest day. Shorter stays work if the Santa visit is the main goal, but you will feel the holiday closures more.

Can we arrive late on Christmas Eve?

Yes, self check-in works at any hour. The challenge is food, not the key. Buy essentials in advance or on the way from the airport, a taxi of roughly 15 minutes costing about €35–45.

Is one week enough for a group of nine?

Yes, if you cook at home on the quiet days. Nine people eating out every night at Christmas is the harder plan.
