Third Advent Weekend and Lucia Day in Rovaniemi, 11–13 December 2026: An Apartment Stay

Staying in Rovaniemi for the third Advent weekend and Lucia Day (11–13 December 2026)? How long to stay, what to cook and why an apartment works.

Living room of Nine Pines family apartment in Rovaniemi

Yes: the weekend of 11–13 December 2026 is a lovely time to be in a Rovaniemi apartment, and it is also a busy one to book. It is the third weekend of Advent, Sunday 13 December is Lucia Day, and the run-up to Christmas is in full swing. If you want a three-bedroom flat for a family or group that weekend, check live dates on Airbnb or Booking.com early, then use this guide to decide how long to stay and how to run the weekend.

What is special about 11–13 December 2026?

The calendar does most of the work. The first Sunday of Advent is 29 November, so Sunday 13 December is the third, and the fourth falls on 20 December, five days before Christmas Day. The 13th is also St Lucia’s Day, celebrated in Finland with a Lucia procession: a girl in a white gown and candle crown, often with attendants, usually in churches, schools and public halls. We would not promise any specific event on a specific date; local listings and the city’s own pages are the place to check, and they change from year to year.

This is also the season of *pikkujoulu*, the Finnish “little Christmas” parties that companies and friends hold before the real thing. In practice that means restaurants and taxis are busier on Fridays and Saturdays in December, which is worth knowing when you plan a family dinner out. If you want to eat at a specific restaurant, book ahead; if you prefer a calm evening, an apartment with a kitchen for nine takes the pressure off completely.

Is a weekend enough?

A Friday-to-Sunday stay is the shortest we would recommend for anyone flying in. Two nights go quickly once you subtract arrival and departure, so for most flying families three or four nights, such as Thursday to Sunday or Friday to Tuesday, feels better than two. Anything involving a long journey should lean towards four.

If you drive from within Finland, a classic Friday evening arrival and Sunday afternoon departure works. Check-in at Nine Pines is from 16:00, any time of the evening and also late at night, through a code lockbox, so a late Friday arrival is easy. The code and a photo guide arrive three days before you do.

A weekend plan that does not overfill

Our rule of thumb is that the best December weekends are the ones with fewer plans.

  • Friday: Arrive, unpack, eat something simple. The two grocery stores near us, K-Market and Sale, are close enough for a quick shop. Put the first load of damp winter clothes in the dryer after dinner.
  • Saturday: One outdoor block around the middle of the day while it is lightest, then the afternoon in the flat. Saturday evening is the busiest night for restaurants and taxis.
  • Sunday: Lucia Day. A slow breakfast at the dining table, a walk on the forest trails, and the afternoon candles and baking if you like. Leave early enough for your flight or drive.

Baking and cooking for Advent

December in Finland tastes of ginger, cinnamon and prune. Many families bake *joulutorttu* (prune pastry stars) and buy *glögi*, the spiced mulled drink, from the supermarket. Lucia Day itself is traditionally marked with saffron buns, *lussekatter* (also called *lussebulle*, depending on where you come from).

The Nine Pines kitchen has an oven, microwave, dishwasher, coffee machine and kettle, and a dining table for six, which is enough to turn a Sunday morning into a baking session. Bring any particular moulds or tins you cannot do without, and shop for the rest locally. Our post on Advent food in a Rovaniemi apartment lists what to look for in a Finnish supermarket.

Where to stay for this weekend: centre, village or Korkalovaara?

For a December weekend, we would put the question this way. The city centre is for people who want to walk to restaurants. The Santa Claus Village area is for people who want to be next to the village. Korkalovaara, 3.5 km west of the centre where we are, is for people who want a calm, dark, residential evening and a full kitchen, with the centre 8 minutes away by car or about 15 minutes on the direct bus from 150 m from the door, and Santa Claus Village 15 minutes away by car.

On a clear night, and with no promises, the aurora can show from the yard because the hill is darker than downtown. For the broader comparison, see where to stay in Rovaniemi: areas compared.

Practical notes for a December weekend

  • Daylight is short. Expect only a few hours of real daylight, so plan outdoor time around the middle of the day.
  • Bring real winter clothing. Our post on packing for winter in a Rovaniemi apartment covers layers and the washer-and-dryer trick.
  • Parking. One free space in the yard, with room for a car with a roof box, plus an ice scraper and snow brush.
  • Quiet hours run from 22:00 to 07:00 in our family building, and there are no parties, which suits a Lucia weekend of candles and music at a reasonable volume.

Sleeping up to nine

Nine Pines has three bedrooms: a 160 cm double, and two rooms with two 90 cm single beds each, plus a sofa bed sized for two children and an armchair bed in the living room. Linen and towels for everyone are included, a baby cot is free on request, and there are colouring books for children. There is one bathroom with a shower and a separate second toilet. The flat is on the second floor with no lift.

FAQ: the third Advent weekend in Rovaniemi

Should we book for just Friday to Sunday?

If you are flying in, we would add a night. If you are driving from elsewhere in Finland, two nights is realistic.

Are shops open on Sunday 13 December?

Opening hours vary by shop and change in December, so check the store’s own page. Buy anything essential for Sunday on Saturday.

Is Lucia Day a public holiday?

No. It is a traditional celebration, not a public holiday in Finland, so ordinary services run, although some places have special programmes.

Can we arrive late on Friday?

Yes. Check-in is from 16:00 and self check-in through the lockbox works at any hour, including late at night.
