Korkalovaara in February: Deep Snow, Returning Light and Sledging From the Door
February on our quiet Rovaniemi hill: deep snow, daylight coming back, sledging hills and trails a few minutes from the apartment door.

Korkalovaara in February is the neighbourhood at its most useful for a winter stay: deep snow on the trails, daylight coming back week by week, sledging hills a few minutes from the door and a quiet street to come home to. It is also the month when school-holiday travellers arrive, so the practical details — buses, shops, parking, drying gear — matter more than in January. Here is how we would describe February on our hill to a friend who is about to book.
We are Joona and Alla, local hosts who live a few minutes from Nine Pines. For February weeks, check the live calendar on Airbnb or Booking.com early; school-holiday weeks fill first.
How is February different from December on the hill?
December is dark and candle-lit; February is bright, and cold in a different way. The sun is back above the horizon for much longer, snow lies deep, and the evenings stretch week by week. Many guests tell us the biggest surprise is how light it feels by the end of the month. Our post on daylight from February to April shows how arrival and evening plans change.
For a family, February is the sweet spot between darkness and spring: enough daylight for children to play outside after school-style days, and still deep winter for snow and, on clear nights, auroras.
Snow, trails and sledging
Forest trails for walking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing start a few minutes from the apartment, and the Korkalovaara hills are good for sledging. Ask us for a sledge on arrival. In February the snow is usually deep and stable, which makes the trails easier than in early winter, but extremely cold days can change a family’s plans. Dress in layers and shorten outings rather than abandoning them. See outdoors from your door for the practical side and why we like staying near forest trails.
Days that begin and end at the apartment
Winter days in Rovaniemi have a rhythm: outdoor time in the middle, warm food and dry clothes before and after. A typical February day for a family at Nine Pines starts with breakfast at the table, a morning out, lunch at home or in town, an afternoon sledge or trail, then the snowsuits go into the washer and dryer after dinner. The tumble dryer is the unsung hero of a winter week. Our post on a slow day in Korkalovaara describes the pattern.
School-holiday weeks and busy February dates
Finnish winter-holiday weeks and UK half-term both land in February, which means a busy month for Rovaniemi accommodation. If you can choose, a week that avoids those peaks gives you quieter slopes and more choice. If you cannot, book early. Our guides to UK half-term in Rovaniemi and booking for February and March explain what to expect.
Special days that touch the neighbourhood
Several Finnish days in February affect shops and routines. Runeberg Day on 5 February and Sámi National Day on 6 February are small observances, Laskiainen (Shrove Tuesday) brings sledging, pea soup and buns — in 2027 it falls on 9 February — and Kalevala Day arrives on 28 February. Check opening hours if a public holiday lands on your week. Our posts on Runeberg Day and Sámi National Day and Laskiainen give details.
Shops, buses and getting around
Two grocery stores, K-Market and Sale, are in the neighbourhood. The bus stop is 150 m from the door, with a direct bus to the city centre in about 15 minutes that continues to Santa Claus Village. By car it is 8 minutes to the centre, 15 minutes to Santa Claus Village, SantaPark and the airport, and 10 minutes to the Ounasvaara ski slopes. A taxi from the airport costs roughly €35–45. In snow, the margin matters; leave earlier than you think.
Parking and winter driving
If you hire a car, there is one free parking space in the yard next to the entrance, with room for a car with a roof box. We provide an ice scraper and snow brush. After a snowfall, you may need to clear the car before you leave; keep ten minutes for that on departure mornings. Our guide to winter parking and the one on deep snow say more.
Northern lights from the hill
Korkalovaara has darker skies than the centre, and on a strong night the aurora shows from the yard. February often brings clear nights, which also bring the coldest temperatures. If you want to watch, dress well and keep a hot drink ready; the kitchen has a kettle and a coffee machine. Quiet hours begin at 22:00, so keep voices low if you step out late. See an aurora night from your apartment.
Who February on our hill suits
Families who want snow and a calm base, groups who like cooking together, and travellers who want the option of the Ounasvaara slopes ten minutes away. It does not suit anyone who wants restaurants at the door or who cannot manage stairs: the apartment is on the second floor with no lift. More about the home is on the Nine Pines page and the location page.
How a week in February is usually paced
The guests who enjoy February most do not fill every hour. They plan one bigger outing every second day and keep the other days for the hill, the trails and the sofa. Because the daylight is short but returning, a late-morning start still gives you several bright hours. Build in one rest day around the middle of the week; with a washing machine, a dryer and a full kitchen in the apartment, that day also catches up on laundry and a proper family meal at the table.
