Seeing the Northern Lights From Where You Sleep: Choosing a Rovaniemi Apartment for Aurora Season

Choosing a Rovaniemi apartment for aurora season: why dark skies, a yard and a flexible check-in matter, and what no host can promise.

You can see the northern lights from some places to stay in Rovaniemi without joining a tour, but only if the location has darker skies and a spot to stand outside. No host can promise the aurora, because it depends on solar activity and clear weather. What a good apartment can do is give you the best chance and make waiting comfortable. This post explains what to look for when you choose where to stay for aurora season.

What decides whether you can see the aurora

Three things matter: solar activity, cloud cover and darkness. You cannot control the first two. The third you can, by choosing a place with less artificial light. Town centres glow; residential hills glow less. Korkalovaara, where Nine Pines is, has darker skies than downtown, and on a strong night the aurora shows from our yard.

Features worth asking about

  • An open view to the north from a yard, a balcony or a nearby path
  • Low light in the surroundings
  • Safe, clear paths outside, with grip for icy surfaces
  • Warm clothing space near the door, so you can dress quickly
  • A flexible check-in and quiet building for late nights

Staying a few nights, not one

The more nights you stay, the better your chances. A single night is a gamble; a week gives several attempts. This is one reason families choose an apartment: you can watch forecasts, wait indoors with a hot drink and step out when the sky clears, without a booked pick-up time. With a washing machine and tumble dryer, you can also keep warm clothes ready.

Forecasts and apps

Use an aurora forecast app and a cloud forecast together. Aurora activity tells you whether there is a chance; the cloud forecast tells you whether you can see it. Check both in the evening, and again later at night. Set an alarm only if you are really keen, and do not stay up on a poor forecast. Many first-timers expect a strong green show, but sometimes it is a pale glow that a camera captures better than the eye.

Dressing for the yard

Standing still at night in winter is colder than walking. Bring a down jacket, warm boots, hat, mittens and a thermal layer, and keep them by the door. Children should wear the full snowsuit, and a hot drink in a flask helps. Do not stay out longer than you are comfortable. When you come in, the dryer takes care of damp gloves.

When to come

The aurora season in Lapland runs through the dark months, from autumn into spring. Autumn and early winter have long nights, but cloud cover can be high. Late winter often has clearer, colder nights and good snow. We cannot say which nights will be best, so we suggest a minimum of four or five nights.

Photographing the aurora

If you want pictures, bring a tripod and a camera or phone with a night mode. Use a timer to avoid shake. Cold drains batteries quickly, so keep a spare in an inside pocket. Joona’s Lapland photographs are available as prints, so if you like a souvenir, see our photo prints page.

Aurora tours versus watching from home

Tours take you to dark places and know the best spots, and guests can get 5 % off via our activities page. Watching from the yard costs nothing and fits around children’s bedtimes. Many guests do both: one tour night and several home nights. For detailed comparisons of tours, our travel blog Hungrytravelfamily is the better source.

What we tell guests

Be patient and be warm. Check the forecast, keep an eye on the sky, and know that missing the aurora on one night does not mean missing it all week. At Nine Pines, you can look at the sky from the yard, then go back inside to a kitchen, a kettle and a sofa. See the apartment page for details.

A calm routine for aurora nights

We suggest a simple routine. After dinner, check the forecast. If it looks promising, put on warm clothes and step outside for ten minutes to look north. If nothing appears, go back inside, have a hot drink and check again later. Children can sleep and be woken if the sky lights up, though many prefer to stay in bed. Keep expectations modest: sometimes the lights are faint, sometimes spectacular, and sometimes absent.

Realistic expectations

The northern lights are natural, not scheduled. Nobody, including tour operators, can guarantee them. A fair way to think about it is that you are creating good conditions: dark skies, enough nights, warm clothes and patience. If you see them, wonderful. If not, you still have a comfortable apartment, forest trails and a good week in Lapland.

Light pollution and how to avoid it

Even in Rovaniemi, street lights and car headlights affect what you see. Turn off outdoor lights where possible, let your eyes adjust for a few minutes and stand away from bright windows. These small steps make a visible difference.

Children and the aurora

Young children often fall asleep before the lights appear, so decide in advance whether to wake them. Some families let older children stay up with a blanket and cocoa; others prefer sleep. Either choice is fine. Keep outdoor time short, bring them in as soon as they are cold and let the dryer deal with the damp mittens.
