Rovaniemi Apartment With Free Parking and a Washing Machine: A Booking Checklist

A host's checklist for choosing a Rovaniemi apartment: parking, washer and dryer, kitchen, stairs and check-in, with questions to ask before you book.

Hallway and wardrobes at Nine Pines

If you are comparing Rovaniemi apartments, five details decide how the holiday feels: where you park, whether there is a tumble dryer as well as a washing machine, how well the kitchen is equipped, whether there is a lift, and how you check in. Listing photos rarely show any of them.

We host guests at a family apartment in Korkalovaara, and these are the questions we would ask any host before paying a deposit.

Why does free parking matter in Rovaniemi?

In summer, parking is a minor convenience. In winter, it is a part of the trip. Cars here sit outside in -15 °C or colder, they get snowed on overnight, and a space you have to walk to, or pay for, or share with strangers, adds friction to every morning.

Questions to ask: Is parking included or extra? Is it a designated space or “somewhere on the street”? Is it close enough to carry a sleeping child to the door? Is there room for a roof box? And is there something to scrape and brush the car with?

At Nine Pines, one free space is in the yard next to the entrance, with room for a car with a roof box, and we provide an ice scraper and snow brush. If you need a second space, ask us before booking, because we would rather plan than promise.

Washer only, or washer and dryer?

Many apartments list a “washing machine” and stop there. In Lapland winter, a dryer is the feature that counts. Hats, mittens, thermal layers, snow trousers and socks all get wet, and everything needs to be dry by morning. Hanging them on a rack in a warm room works for light items; it does not work for padded snowsuits.

At Nine Pines there is a washing machine and a tumble dryer in the apartment: snowsuits go in after dinner and are dry by morning. Always check the listing text and, if in doubt, message the host. Also ask about detergent and whether there is a drying rack for wool.

What should the kitchen have?

Look past “fully equipped”. For a group, the useful basics are a dishwasher, an oven, a microwave, a coffee machine and a kettle. Check the dining table seats the number you expect to eat at once. Ours seats six, which is something we state clearly because we have nine sleeping places.

Do not underestimate how much simpler a holiday is if breakfast and one other meal happen at home. If you want to plan this, two supermarkets within the neighbourhood, K-Market and Sale, cover the basics, and we tell guests where the bigger shops are.

Is there a lift, and does it matter?

Many Finnish apartment buildings have no lift. Ours does not: Nine Pines is on the second floor. If you have a pushchair, heavy suitcases, or travellers with mobility needs, this is a deal-breaker for some and a non-issue for others. The only good approach is to ask, and to be told the truth. We would rather lose a booking than have you arrive and find a staircase you did not expect.

How does check-in work?

Check-in at a tourist apartment may be a key handover with a host in person, a reception desk, or a lockbox. Each has advantages. A lockbox is the most flexible for flights that land late. Ours works like this: check-in from 16:00, at any time including late at night, with a code lockbox; the code and a photo guide arrive three days before arrival. We also live a few minutes away and usually answer messages within the hour.

What about beds, bathrooms and linen?

Count real beds, check who gets which room, and ask whether linen and towels are included. Check the number of bathrooms: nine people sharing one shower needs patience. At Nine Pines we have one bathroom with a shower and a separate second toilet, wardrobes in every room, and linen and towels for everyone.

Do the house rules suit your group?

Read them before booking. In ours, the quiet hours are 22:00–07:00, the maximum is nine guests, and parties are not allowed. We keep it a quiet family building because it is a neighbourhood where real families live. The guest guide sets these out, along with check-in and what to pack by season.

The five-minute pre-booking message

If you are not sure, send the host this message: “Is parking free and where is it? Is there a tumble dryer as well as a washing machine? Is there a lift? Does the dining table seat everyone? How does late check-in work?” A good host answers in a sentence each. If you get vague replies, that tells you something.

What about winter driving and arrival?

If you are collecting a hire car at the airport in winter, ask the rental company for winter tyres (they are normal in Finland in the cold season) and give yourself time at the first stop to get used to the road. Rovaniemi’s main roads are ploughed and gritted, but residential streets can be packed snow. A host who lives nearby can tell you which streets are fine and where to avoid parking so that the plough can pass.

It also helps to know where the nearest shop is before you arrive. Ours are close: two grocery stores, K-Market and Sale, are in the neighbourhood, so a late arrival does not mean a hungry evening. A bus stop 150 m from the door gives you a back-up if you would rather not drive on the first day.
