Rovaniemi Without a Car: Using the Bus From Korkalovaara to the Centre and Santa Claus Village
Can you stay in Rovaniemi without a car? How the bus works from Korkalovaara to the centre and Santa Claus Village, and when a taxi or rental car helps.

You can stay in Rovaniemi without a car, and many visitors do. From our apartment in Korkalovaara, a bus stop is 150 m from the door, and a direct bus reaches the city centre in about 15 minutes, continuing to Santa Claus Village. For the rest, there are taxis, and some guests rent a car for a day or two. Here is how to plan it.
The bus from Korkalovaara
The bus stop closest to Nine Pines is 150 m away, about a two-minute walk. A direct bus runs to the city centre in around 15 minutes and carries on to Santa Claus Village. Because routes and timetables change, check the current schedule before you go, either with the Rovaniemi public transport operator’s website or app, or on your phone map. Buses are less frequent late in the evening and on holidays, so look at the last departures when you plan a night out.
Tickets and payment
Ask at the time of travel how to pay. Ticket options usually include a mobile app or paying on board, and fares are set by the operator. We do not quote prices because they change. A family may find a day ticket or multi-trip option useful, so check the options when you buy.
Winter bus travel with children
Allow extra time in winter. Stops can be cold, and snowy conditions can slow services. Dress everyone warmly, carry a snack and keep a pair of spare mittens. A pushchair can usually be taken on board, but a sledge or pulk is easier on snow. Our flat is on the second floor with no lift, so folding a pushchair is part of the routine.
When a taxi makes sense
Use a taxi for the airport (about 15 minutes, roughly €35–45), late evenings after the last bus and for groups with luggage. For a family of five or more, a taxi for a short trip can cost about as much as individual bus tickets, so compare. You can also order a taxi to the door of the apartment.
When a car is better
A car helps if you want to reach places that buses do not serve well. It is 8 minutes by car to the centre, 15 to Santa Claus Village, SantaPark and the airport, 10 to the Ounasvaara ski slopes and about an hour to Ranua Wildlife Park. A hybrid approach works well: take the bus for day-to-day trips and rent a car for one or two excursions. At Nine Pines there is free parking in the yard if you do rent one.
What you can do on foot
From the apartment you can walk to two grocery stores, K-Market and Sale, in the neighbourhood, and to forest trails a few minutes away for walking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Children can go sledging on the Korkalovaara hills (ask for a sledge). So even without a car, daily life is easy. Our location page has the details.
A car-free week: sample pattern
- Arrival day: taxi from the airport, local shop for the first evening
- Days with a tour: the operator often collects guests; check pick-up points
- Town days: bus in, lunch, bus back
- Home days: trails, sledging, a rest and a long dinner
- Departure: pre-booked taxi
Some tour operators pick up guests from accommodation; ask when booking through our activities page, where guests get 5 % off.
Is it safe to walk at night?
Korkalovaara is a quiet residential area. In winter, paths can be icy and dark, so wear boots with good grip and carry a headlamp or phone torch. Keep children close near roads.
Why the neighbourhood suits a car-free stay
Korkalovaara is a quiet residential hill about 3.5 km west of the centre, where Rovaniemi families live. The things you need most days are close: groceries, the bus stop, the forest and the sledging hills. That means a car-free week is practical rather than a compromise. You will not be stranded; you will simply plan trips rather than drift between places.
Planning around bus timetables
The best habit is to check the timetable the evening before, note the return time and add a margin. If you are heading into town for dinner, check the last bus before you order dessert. Save the taxi number on your phone as a backup, and keep a charged phone for maps. If the weather turns, a taxi can rescue a day, and that is the point of mixing options.
Tours and pick-ups
Many activities include pick-up from the city centre or from accommodation. Ask before you book. Our activities page lists tours for guests with a 5 % discount, and our travel blog Hungrytravelfamily has activity guides if you want to compare them.
Groceries without a car
Shopping car-free is easy in Korkalovaara. Carry a rucksack or a foldable bag, buy small and often at K-Market or Sale, and do one bigger shop in town on a day you are already there. A sledge also works as a shopping trolley on snowy days, and children enjoy pulling it.
Our honest view
A car is a convenience, not a requirement. If you are comfortable with buses and taxis and you plan to stay mostly around Rovaniemi, you will manage. If you have several small children, lots of luggage or want to reach places far from bus lines, hiring a car for the whole stay makes sense. We are happy to talk it through by WhatsApp before you decide.
