Holiday Apartment in Rovaniemi Near Santa Claus Village: How Close Do You Need to Be?

Looking for a holiday apartment near Santa Claus Village? What 'near' means in Rovaniemi: drive times, buses and what matters more than distance.

The closest you can sleep to Santa Claus Village is a few minutes away, but you rarely need to. A holiday apartment 15 minutes by car or a short bus ride from the Village works for most families, and often gives you more space, a kitchen and easier parking than the places right beside it.

We host a family apartment in Rovaniemi and get this question constantly, so here is how we think about “near Santa Claus Village” when you are choosing where to stay.

How far is Santa Claus Village from the rest of Rovaniemi?

Santa Claus Village sits on the Arctic Circle, north of the city centre, close to the airport. The airport and the Village are neighbours, which is why many hotels and cottages cluster in that area. The city centre, with its shops, restaurants and the main bus station, is a short drive back south.

So the real choice is not “near or far”. It is whether you want to sleep in the Village area, in the centre, or in a residential neighbourhood between the two and the forest.

What does “near” actually mean in minutes?

From Nine Pines in Korkalovaara, which is a residential hill 3.5 km west of the centre, these are the times we give guests:

  • Santa Claus Village, SantaPark and the airport: about 15 minutes by car.
  • City centre: about 8 minutes by car, or about 15 minutes on the direct bus from the stop 150 m from our door. The bus continues on to Santa Claus Village.
  • Ounasvaara ski slopes: about 10 minutes by car.
  • Ranua Wildlife Park: around an hour by car.

For most visitors, 15 minutes is the difference between “we can pop over” and “we need to plan a trip”. We think it is close enough that visiting the Village is easy, and far enough that you are not sleeping in a tourist complex.

Do you need a car if you stay outside the Village?

It depends on the season and your group. A car is very useful for a big family: you carry less, you control the schedule, and a late flight is less stressful. But it is not essential. Rovaniemi’s buses cover the main routes, and the direct bus from our stop runs into the centre and on to Santa Claus Village. If you plan to rely on buses, check the timetable for your dates before you book and ask your host which stop is closest.

If you do drive, make sure parking is included and that it is somewhere you can reach in snow. We include one free parking space in the yard next to the entrance, with room for a car with a roof box, and we provide an ice scraper and a snow brush.

What do you gain by not staying right next to the Village?

Three things come up again and again with our guests. First, space: apartments typically give you separate bedrooms, which matters with children who go to bed earlier than parents. Second, a kitchen, so you are not paying restaurant prices for three meals a day. Third, a bit of real Rovaniemi: a supermarket round the corner, a forest trail, a bus stop with local passengers.

It is also quieter. Korkalovaara is where Rovaniemi families live, and the dark sky is a genuine bonus: on a strong night the northern lights can be seen from our yard, so you do not necessarily have to go anywhere.

What do you give up?

Plainly: you cannot walk to the Village from here, and you will not wake up next to the post office. If your dream is to step out of your door and be at Santa’s office in two minutes, a hotel or cabin in the Village area is the better fit. We would rather tell you that than have you disappointed.

How should you plan visiting Santa Claus Village from an apartment?

Treat it as a half-day or a day, not a base. Eat breakfast in the apartment, go in the morning or at the time you have booked for any activity, come back to the apartment for a rest or a hot lunch if you have small children, and return later if you want. Having a kitchen to retreat to is the main advantage of staying nearby but not in it.

If you want ideas for what to do, our family travel blog, Hungrytravelfamily, has the activity guides. Here we stick to the accommodation side. For booking tours as a guest, see our guest activities page, where Nine Pines guests get 5 % off with the code NINEPINES5.

Which kind of traveller should choose the Village area instead?

We are not trying to talk you out of the Santa Claus Village area, because for some trips it is the right answer. A short stopover, a night before an early flight, a couple who want a cabin-style room and not much else, or a group whose whole itinerary sits on the Arctic Circle: all of these are well served by sleeping close to the airport and the Village. The distances are small, the transfer is easy, and you do not need a kitchen for one night.

Where we think an apartment further back wins is on stays of four nights or more, on trips with children who nap, and on groups that need several bedrooms. Those travellers spend more time at the accommodation, so the space and kitchen start to count for more than the last ten minutes of the drive.

A simple rule for deciding

Ask yourself how many hours a day you will actually be in the accommodation. If the answer is “only to sleep”, location wins and you should stay as close to your main plans as you can. If the answer is “breakfast, an afternoon rest, dinner and the evening”, then comfort wins, and 15 minutes by car or a short bus ride is a small price for a proper living room and a dryer for the snowsuits.
