A Grown-Up Family Trip to Rovaniemi: Parents, Adult Children and the One Double Bed

Parents, adult children and partners in one Rovaniemi apartment: who gets the double bed, how bathrooms and stairs work, and when it is not the right fit.

Third bedroom with two single beds at Nine Pines

A grown-up family trip to Rovaniemi — parents, adult children, perhaps a partner or two — works very well in a three-bedroom apartment, with one condition: be honest early about who gets the double bed. Our own apartment has exactly one 160 cm double and four 90 cm single beds in two rooms, so the arithmetic of adult families is different from the arithmetic of small children. This guide helps you work it out before you book.

We are Joona and Alla, hosts in Rovaniemi. Many of our guests are adult siblings travelling with parents, or parents joining grown-up children who live abroad. If this is you, check live dates for Nine Pines on Airbnb or Booking.com once you have a head-count.

Who travels as a grown-up family?

The groups vary. Two parents with two adult children is the simplest. Parents with an adult child and a partner is common. Three generations, including a grandparent, brings stairs into the discussion. Siblings with their own partners and parents makes six to eight people. Each pattern puts different demands on beds, bathrooms and the dining table. Our posts on family reunions and three-generation trips look at related situations.

The bed question, answered honestly

Nine Pines has three bedrooms: one with a 160 cm double bed, two with a pair of 90 cm single beds. There is also a sofa bed in the living room, sized for two children, and an armchair bed. For adults, that means:

  • Four adults, two couples: one couple in the double, the other couple in a room with two singles. Fine for many couples, impractical for some.
  • Four adults, two parents and two adult children: parents in the double, each adult child in a single-bed room. Everyone has privacy.
  • Five or six adults: the double plus two rooms with singles, with each person in their own bed in the single rooms. Works well for siblings and parents.
  • Seven to nine: possible only if several people are children or if adults accept the sofa bed and armchair bed. We would not recommend nine adults.

If your group includes two couples who both need a double bed, say so in your first message to us. We will tell you directly whether Nine Pines suits you or whether a different apartment would be a better fit. Our post on three couples sharing is blunt on the same point.

Bathrooms for adults

There is one bathroom with a shower and a separate second toilet. For four to six adults this is comfortable if you agree a morning order the evening before; the second toilet helps the most. Adults are used to being faster than children, so the bathroom rarely becomes a bottleneck. Our guide to one bathroom and nine people contains a sample morning schedule.

Stairs and the second floor

The apartment is on the second floor and there is no lift. For most adults that is a flight of stairs with a suitcase, which is not a problem. If a parent or grandparent has trouble with stairs, or if anyone travels with reduced mobility, say so before booking. Winter adds ice outside, so plan the walk from the car or the bus stop. Our posts on apartments without a lift and icy pavements have practical advice.

The dining table and the kitchen

The table seats six and the kitchen has a dishwasher, an oven, a microwave, a coffee machine and a kettle. For a family of four to six adults, that means dinner for everyone at the same time without balancing plates on knees. If you are eight, you will eat in two shifts or use the sofa area for the overflow. Many grown-up families enjoy cooking together in the evening; the kitchen is made for that, and the two grocery stores in the neighbourhood, K-Market and Sale, make a quick top-up possible.

Money and fairness: how to split the cost

Adult families often split costs among several households. Agree early who books, who pays the deposit and how the total is divided: by head, by bedroom, or by couple. We wrote a short guide to splitting the cost between families. The platform shows the total price, and you can calculate cost per person from the live price on the booking page.

Getting around as adults

Most adult groups choose one hire car plus the occasional taxi. There is one free parking space in the yard next to the entrance, with room for a car with a roof box; if you travel with two cars, see our post on two cars and one parking space. The bus stop is 150 m from the door, with a direct bus to the centre in about 15 minutes. By car it is 8 minutes to the centre and 15 minutes to Santa Claus Village, SantaPark and the airport.

What an adult family usually wants from the evenings

Time together without the hotel bar. A table, a kettle, a place to sit. A balcony for a short breath of cold air. Fast Wi-Fi for those who need to check messages. Quiet hours begin at 22:00, so a late card game should end at a sensible hour. If you want a sauna evening, the apartment has no sauna, but the swimming hall in the centre has public saunas, and guests get 5 % off a private wood-heated sauna tour through our activities page.

When Nine Pines is not the right choice

If your group is eight or nine adults, if every couple needs a double bed, or if someone cannot manage stairs, please tell us and we will help you look elsewhere. We prefer an honest “not this one” to a disappointed family. Read more on the Nine Pines page.
