Rovaniemi Apartment for the 8 December Long Weekend: A Guide for Groups From Spain and Italy

How a group from Spain or Italy can use the 8 December long weekend for a Rovaniemi apartment stay: dates, food, beds and transport.

Bedroom with 160 cm double bed at Nine Pines, Rovaniemi

If you are coming from Spain or Italy for the 8 December long weekend, a self-catering apartment in Rovaniemi gives a group of six to nine people one kitchen, one front door and no waiting for a restaurant table. In 2026, 8 December (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a public holiday in both countries) falls on a Tuesday, which is why many travellers turn it into a long weekend by taking Monday 7 December as a bridge day.

It is also one of the first moments in the winter when Rovaniemi starts to feel like Christmas. This guide covers what to book, what to bring, and how to make the most of a short stay from a host’s viewpoint. We cannot quote prices, because ours change daily, so check live dates on Airbnb or Booking.com.

Which nights work for the 8 December long weekend?

The simplest pattern is Friday 4 December to Tuesday 8 December or Wednesday 9 December, four or five nights, which lets you use the bridge day. A shorter version is Saturday 5 December to Tuesday 8 December, three nights. Because Finnish Independence Day is on Sunday 6 December, some shops and services run reduced hours on that day; our post on Independence Day in Rovaniemi explains how to plan around it.

Check how your flights connect. Many travellers from southern Europe reach Rovaniemi via Helsinki or another hub, so see our arrival plan for flying via Helsinki. If you land late, the lockbox check-in at Nine Pines works at any hour from 16:00 onwards.

Why a group from Spain or Italy often prefers an apartment

Dinner is the main reason. In southern Europe the main meal is usually later and longer than in Finland, where many restaurants fill early and kitchens may close sooner than you expect. In an apartment you set the schedule. Nine Pines has a fully equipped kitchen for nine, including a dishwasher, oven, microwave, coffee machine and kettle, and a dining table for six. Two grocery stores, K-Market and Sale, are close to the building.

The other reason is practical: you will be wearing layers you do not normally own. The washing machine and tumble dryer in the apartment mean that wet gloves, socks and snowsuits go in after dinner and are dry by morning. See our Finnish washer and dryer guide if the controls are unfamiliar.

Sleeping arrangements for families and friends

Nine Pines sleeps up to nine across three bedrooms: a 160 cm double bed in the first, two 90 cm single beds in each of the others, plus a sofa bed sized for two children and an armchair bed in the living room. For a multi-generational group, the double room is the natural choice for the oldest couple. For friends, the pairs of single beds work well. Our guide to splitting rooms in a three-bedroom apartment shows some layouts.

One thing to know: the apartment has one bathroom with a shower and a separate second toilet. For a group of nine, a simple morning rota is enough; see one bathroom for nine people.

Food: bring your habits, shop local

You can buy most staples in Finnish supermarkets, but the range of fresh and cured products differs from Spain and Italy. If you want a favourite ingredient, check the rules before you pack food; our post on bringing food into Finland sets them out. For the supermarkets themselves, read Finnish supermarket chains for self-catering.

The coffee habit is easy to keep: the apartment has a coffee machine and a kettle, and Finns drink a lot of coffee. If you are used to a stove-top espresso maker, bring one and check that it suits an electric hob.

What a December long weekend feels like in Rovaniemi

Expect a short day with a long blue twilight, snow cover that varies from year to year, and temperatures that can be well below freezing. You will want proper boots, thermal layers and a windproof outer layer. See what to pack for a winter stay. If you want to join a tour, our guest activities page lists options, and guests get 5 % off with the code NINEPINES5.

Getting around

Nine Pines is in Korkalovaara, 3.5 km from the centre. The bus stop is 150 m from the door, with a direct bus to the centre in about 15 minutes that continues to Santa Claus Village. By car, it is 8 minutes to the centre and 15 minutes to Santa Claus Village and the airport. A taxi from the airport takes about 15 minutes and costs roughly €35–45. For a group of nine, two taxis or a larger vehicle may be needed; read our airport transfer guide for a group of nine.

Common mistakes we see with short winter trips

The first is arriving without a food plan. After a long journey, nobody wants to hunt for a shop, so decide on the first two meals before you leave home. The second is underestimating the cold, particularly for children who stand still while adults take photographs. The third is packing too much into three or four days. A short stay is better with one outdoor activity a day and a slow evening at the apartment. If you keep to that rhythm, the trip feels like a holiday rather than a race, and the apartment becomes the warm centre of it: a table, a kettle and a washing machine that gets the day’s wet clothes ready for tomorrow.

If you travel with grandparents, ask yourselves how they feel about stairs. The apartment is on the second floor and the building has no lift; our post on multigenerational trips and stairs will help you decide.

FAQ: Rovaniemi apartment for the 8 December weekend

Is 8 December a holiday in Finland too?

No. Finland’s Independence Day is on 6 December. 8 December is an ordinary working day in Finland, so local shops and services are open as usual.

Will it be snowy?

Often, but not always. We cannot promise snow on a given date, so plan for cold and for darkness as well.

Can we cook a big dinner?

Yes. The kitchen is equipped for nine, and the dining table seats six, so with nine people you may eat in two groups or use the living room.

Do you speak Spanish or Italian?

We communicate in English. The booking platforms offer translation of messages, which works fine for logistics.
