Christmas Eve to Boxing Day in Rovaniemi: A Three-Night Apartment Stay (24–27 December 2026)

Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 December 2026: how a three-night apartment stay in Rovaniemi works, with food, shops and check-in.

A three-night stay from Thursday 24 December to Sunday 27 December 2026 is the most compact way to have a real Christmas in Rovaniemi, and a three-bedroom apartment suits it better than a hotel room because you will want your own kitchen and somewhere to stay in. The catch is that these are among the most requested dates of the whole winter, so check live availability on Airbnb or Booking.com early.

Below is how those three nights look from a local host’s point of view: what is open, how to eat, and how to keep nine people happy over a Finnish Christmas.

Why a Christmas Eve to Boxing Day weekend works

In 2026 Christmas Eve is a Thursday, Christmas Day a Friday and Boxing Day (tapaninpäivä) a Saturday. Together with Sunday 27 December that gives you a natural long weekend. For visitors with limited annual leave, it means three nights can include all three Christmas days without taking a full week off.

It also matches the way Finns celebrate. Christmas is a quiet family occasion, not a street party. Shops and many services close on Christmas Eve afternoon and Christmas Day, so the best way to experience it like the locals do is to be settled in, with food in the fridge and no need to go anywhere.

Thursday 24 December: arrive and settle

Check-in at Nine Pines is from 16:00, and the key is in a lockbox, so it does not matter if your flight lands late. We send the code and a photo guide three days before arrival. If you land in the morning, read our advice on early arrival and luggage because the apartment will not be ready before the afternoon.

Most important: buy food before you reach the apartment, or earlier in the day. Opening hours on Christmas Eve are short and shops close in the afternoon. Our Christmas Eve food and shops guide explains how to shop. We have two grocery stores in the neighbourhood, K-Market and Sale, but check their hours for the day rather than assuming.

Friday 25 December: a slow Christmas Day

Christmas Day is deliberately quiet in Finland. Public transport runs a reduced service and many places are closed. A holiday apartment is ideal: cook a long breakfast, let the children open presents, and take a walk on the forest trails a few minutes from the building. In a kitchen equipped for nine, with a dishwasher, oven, microwave, coffee machine and kettle, a family meal is easy to manage. Our post on cooking for nine with one oven has timing tips.

Saturday 26 December: Boxing Day

Services start to come back, but not fully. Plan your day around what you have confirmed is open, and keep a flexible mind. Our guide to buses and shops from 20 to 26 December lists what usually changes. If you want a guided activity, look at our guest activities page, where guests get 5 % off with the code NINEPINES5.

Sunday 27 December: depart or extend

The following days are quiet but busy with returning flights. If your plans change, ask us early about extending; we cannot promise availability but we will say honestly what is open. See also 27 to 30 December.

What to book first

  1. The apartment: confirm the three nights and the guest count.
  2. Airport transfer: a taxi from the airport takes roughly 15 minutes and costs around €35–45.
  3. Food plan for 24 and 25 December.
  4. Any activity you want on 26 or 27 December, because capacity is limited.

Is three nights enough?

For a first taste of Christmas in Lapland with a limited holiday budget, yes. For a family that wants snow activities, a few relaxed days, and a rest day, five or seven nights are more comfortable. Our guide on how many nights to stay gives a simple way to decide.

Why choose an apartment for these dates

A hotel room means eating in a restaurant that may be fully booked or closed. In an apartment you can have a Christmas dinner at the dining table for six and the washing machine and tumble dryer mean you can dry wet outdoor clothes overnight. At Nine Pines the snowsuits are dry by morning. See the apartment page for the bedrooms: a double bed in the first room, two single beds in each of the other two rooms, plus a sofa bed and an armchair bed in the living room for a total of nine.

Keeping the children busy without screens

Christmas Day can feel long if the town is closed and the children have opened their presents. We keep colouring books for children, and the Korkalovaara hills are a short walk away for sledging (ask us for a sledge). The forest trails are suitable for a family walk or snowshoeing, and the dark afternoon gives the lights of neighbouring windows a gentle glow. A post-lunch walk followed by a hot drink, then a film or board game in the living room, is a pattern many families settle into. Our guide on evenings in a holiday apartment with kids has more ideas.

Keep in mind that quiet hours run from 22:00 to 07:00, and that excited children on Christmas morning can be heard in a family building. A short word with the youngest the night before works wonders.

Packing for three nights

With washing and drying in the apartment, you can pack light: two sets of base layers per person, a warm outer layer, hats, mittens and one pair of spare socks per day. Wet items go into the dryer after dinner. For a longer packing list, see packing light with a washer and dryer.
