Winter 2026–27 in Rovaniemi: What to Book First, in Order

The order we would book a winter trip to Rovaniemi: apartment first, then flights, transport and tours, with a timeline from late October.

Living room and dining table for six at Nine Pines, Rovaniemi

If you want a Rovaniemi apartment for this winter, book in this order: accommodation first, flights straight after, the car or airport transfer next, and tours last. The reason is simple: in a small town with a fixed number of family-sized apartments, the bed count is the scarcest thing you need, and everything else flexes around it. Check live dates on Airbnb or Booking.com before anything else is locked in.

We are Joona and Alla, local hosts who work in Lapland tourism, and this is the order we give friends who ask “what do we book first for a winter trip?” The date today is late October, so the checklist below is written for a trip between November 2026 and March 2027.

Step 1: Decide the dates and the group size

Before opening any website, settle two numbers: the number of nights and the number of people, counting every child and baby. Many apartments price or restrict by head count, and some platforms ask for ages. Our rule at Nine Pines is a maximum of nine guests. If your group could be six or could be nine depending on cousins, book for the larger number or write to the host first.

Also decide how rigid your dates are. A flexible window of a few days helps in the busy weeks around Christmas and the February school holidays, and our guide on booking when the group size is not final explains how to avoid being caught out.

Step 2: Book the apartment with free cancellation if you can

Accommodation goes first because it is the item with the fewest substitutes. A flight can be changed; a tour can be swapped. A three-bedroom family apartment that fits nine is not something you can find the week before Christmas. If a listing offers a free-cancellation option, take it while you are still confirming flights; our free-cancellation guide explains what to read in the terms.

Prices at Nine Pines are dynamic, so we do not publish a nightly rate. Look at the full total on both Airbnb and Booking.com for your exact dates.

Step 3: Flights, lined up with the apartment’s check-in

Once the apartment is confirmed, book flights. Check-in at Nine Pines is from 16:00 and works at any hour, including late at night, by code lockbox. That removes the pressure of a tight arrival window and makes the cheaper late flights realistic. A taxi from the airport takes roughly 15 minutes and costs about €35–45, so there is no need to tie arrival to a bus timetable.

Step 4: Decide how you will move around

Two sensible set-ups exist. If you rent a car, ask the apartment host about winter parking before you pay for the car; at Nine Pines, there is one free space in the yard next to the entrance, with room for a car with a roof box, and an ice scraper and snow brush are provided. If you do not rent, the bus stop is 150 m from the door and a direct bus reaches the centre in about 15 minutes and continues to Santa Claus Village. Our car-free guide shows how that works in practice.

Step 5: Tours and activities, a little later

Most activities can be booked once the stay is certain. Book the ones with limited seats earlier, and leave a free day around them. Guests who stay with us get 5 % off tours on our activities page with the code NINEPINES5. For detailed tour comparisons, our travel blog Hungrytravelfamily is the better place to look; here we stay with the accommodation side.

Step 6: The small bookings that make winter easier

  • Send the traveller details if the host asks for them; see our note on the Finnish traveller form.
  • Ask about a baby cot (free on request at Nine Pines).
  • Check whether the apartment has a washer and dryer, because winter clothes need drying every day.
  • Check the quiet-hours rule so your plans for evenings fit the building.

What can wait until you arrive?

Groceries, a few extra layers, and local SIM or eSIM decisions can all wait. Even the first supermarket trip is easy because there are two stores in the neighbourhood: a K-Market and a Sale. Our guest guide lists what to pack in winter.

What does a sensible booking timeline look like from here?

Here is a realistic sequence if you start planning this week for a trip in December or the new year. In the first few days, agree dates and headcount and look at the live calendar for your preferred dates. Within a week, book the apartment, ideally with flexible cancellation, and tell everyone in the group which dates are fixed. In the second week, book flights that land comfortably before or after the check-in window, and decide whether you need a car. In the weeks before departure, add tours, pack using the seasonal list in our guest guide, and read the arrival instructions we send three days before you arrive.

The point of this order is to protect the one booking that cannot easily be replaced. If a flight price jumps, you can often shift a day. If the apartment goes, you may be choosing between a hotel with several rooms, splitting the group, or changing the trip altogether. Our hotel-or-apartment decision table shows what that alternative looks like.

Which mistakes do we see most often?

The first is booking non-refundable flights before any accommodation is held, then discovering that the group’s dates leave a gap. The second is counting only adults when searching, then finding that children and babies count towards the maximum. The third is assuming a late flight means a missed check-in; with a lockbox, it does not. The fourth is leaving the car decision until the end, when winter rental cars and child seats can be limited; our guide to child car seats for taxis and rental cars covers what to ask.

Lastly, many travellers book a hotel room “just in case” and forget it. Cancelling in good time is polite and helps other guests, so set a reminder on the cancellation deadline.
