Self Check-In in Rovaniemi: Arriving on a Late Flight, Step by Step
Landing in Rovaniemi late at night? How lockbox self check-in works, how to get from the airport to your apartment, and your first hour step by step.

If your flight lands late in Rovaniemi, self check-in with a code lockbox is the simplest way to arrive. You take a taxi from the airport, enter the code, let yourself in and go to bed, with no one waiting up for you. This is how it works at our apartment, and what to check with any host who offers it.
How does lockbox self check-in work?
A lockbox is a small box fixed near the entrance that holds the key. You open it with a code, take the key and unlock the door. At Nine Pines, check-in is from 16:00 and can happen at any time, including late at night. The code and a photo guide arrive three days before arrival, so you can read it at home, not at the door in the cold.
Good hosts do three things: they send the code in advance, they include photos of the building and the route to the door, and they are reachable if something goes wrong. We live a few minutes away and usually answer within the hour.
How do you get from Rovaniemi airport to the apartment?
The airport is about 15 minutes by taxi from Nine Pines, and a ride costs roughly €35–45. By car it is the same 15 minutes. If you have hired a car, collect it at the airport and drive to the yard, where there is one free parking space next to the entrance with room for a roof box. Ice scraper and snow brush are provided.
If you plan to take a taxi, think about the number of passengers and bags. A group of eight or nine will probably need two vehicles or a larger one. Arrange this before you fly if you can, particularly at busy times. For more on how our location compares with the centre and the Village, read our guide to where to stay in Rovaniemi with kids.
What does the first hour look like?
- Taxi to Hillapolku 3, Korkalovaara. Show the driver the address on your phone.
- Find the lockbox using the photo guide and enter the code.
- Climb to the second floor. There is no lift, so plan for luggage and sleepy children.
- Beds. Linen and towels are ready for everyone.
- Heating and kettle. Put the kettle on while you sort the rooms.
- Quiet hours. Quiet hours run 22:00–07:00, so move quietly if you arrive late.
Tell us you are in and that all is well. A short message is enough.
What about food on a late arrival?
Do not count on anything being open at midnight. There are two grocery stores in the neighbourhood, K-Market and Sale, but they will not be open late at night. If your flight is delayed or lands after the shops close, bring a few snacks, bread, milk for children and something for breakfast. Some guests buy basics at the airport or on the way. Check opening hours for the day you arrive; they vary and are shorter on Sundays and public holidays.
Is self check-in safe and reliable?
It is used widely in Finland and elsewhere. The most common issues are practical: a code that does not work because of cold fingers or a mistyped digit, or a guest who cannot find the box in the dark. That is why we send photos with the guide. If the code does not work, call or message us. We live nearby and will help.
The advantage over a key handover is that no one has to meet you at 01:00 after a delayed flight. The disadvantage is that you do not meet your host on arrival, though you can always message us, and we are happy to say hello in person if you ask.
What should you do if your flight is delayed or cancelled?
Message the host as soon as you know. Because check-in is at any time, a delay is usually not a problem, but we like to know that you are on your way. If you are cancelled and need to rebook, tell us as soon as possible and read the cancellation terms on Airbnb or Booking.com. Finland’s winter weather occasionally delays flights, so allow a buffer on your first night.
How do you prepare at home?
Save the address, download the guide, put the host’s WhatsApp in your phone, and write the lockbox code somewhere you can find it with gloves on. If you are a larger group, decide in advance who carries what up the stairs. Our guest guide explains the house in more detail, and our booking checklist for Rovaniemi apartments covers what to ask any host.
What should you know about the building and the neighbours?
Nine Pines is in a quiet family building where Rovaniemi families live. The address is Hillapolku 3, 96500 Rovaniemi. After a long journey it is tempting to unpack loudly or let children run in the stairwell, but the quiet hours of 22:00 to 07:00 apply, and neighbours have to get up for work and school. A tired child is easiest to carry up the stairs, shoes off at the door as is the custom in Finland. The next morning everything feels better.
What do you do in the morning after a late arrival?
Do not plan an early start. Sleep, make coffee, have a slow breakfast with what you bought, and look at the daylight. If you arrived in the dark, the view from the balcony may be a surprise. Then decide what you need: groceries, a walk, or just a rest. The first day after a late flight is best when it is gentle. We are happy to answer questions by message while you get your bearings, and our location page shows the nearest shops and bus stop.
What about the traveller form?
Finnish accommodation providers ask guests for some basic details for each adult. We send the form ahead, so please complete it before you travel, which means one less thing to do on arrival at midnight. If you are not sure what is needed, ask us.
