Landing at Kemi, Oulu or Kittilä Instead: Getting to Your Rovaniemi Apartment
Flying into Kemi, Oulu or Kittilä? How to plan the road to a Rovaniemi apartment, the late check-in and the winter weather.

If your cheapest or most convenient flight lands at Kemi, Oulu or Kittilä rather than Rovaniemi, you can still reach a Rovaniemi apartment the same day, but you must plan the road leg, the weather and your check-in time. Roughly speaking, Kemi is about 110 km from Rovaniemi, Kittilä about 190 km and Oulu about 210 km. Check the route and journey time on the day, because winter conditions change them.
We are a Rovaniemi host couple and we get asked about this every winter. Here is a calm way to think about it. Our apartment, Nine Pines, uses a code lockbox for check-in from 16:00, also late at night, so a long journey does not make you miss a reception. Check live dates on Airbnb or Booking.com.
Why people land somewhere else
There are three common reasons. The first is price or timing: the flight to another airport fits your budget or dates better. The second is a group split across several flights. The third is a connection: some itineraries combine Rovaniemi with another Lapland destination. Our post on splitting a trip between two places to stay and the one on groups arriving on different flights are worth reading.
The three options for the road leg
Rental car
This is the most flexible choice for a family, especially with luggage and children. Ask the rental company how winter tyres are fitted and whether there are fees for one-way hire. The Rovaniemi end is simple: one free parking space in the yard, with room for a car with a roof box, and an ice scraper and snow brush are provided. Read arriving by car and checking weather and roads before travel.
Taxi or transfer
Longer taxi journeys are expensive and need to be arranged in advance. Do not assume a taxi will be waiting at a small airport. We cannot quote a fare for these distances. If you want a transfer, ask a local operator for a fixed quote and confirm the vehicle can take your luggage and car seats; see child car seats in taxis and rental cars.
Bus or train
Public transport timetables change between seasons and days, so we cannot list them. Check the operator websites for your date. If you arrive by train in Rovaniemi, our guide from the station to the apartment explains how to get to Korkalovaara. From the centre, our bus stop is 150 m from the door, and the ride into town takes about 15 minutes.
Timing: when will you actually arrive?
Add generous time for winter driving, darkness and luggage. If a flight lands in the afternoon, a drive can easily take you into the evening, which is fine for us because the lockbox works at any hour. Tell us your expected time anyway; we usually answer within the hour and can help if your plans change. See late arrival and self check-in and lockbox tips for winter.
Food on arrival
If you arrive late, you will want a simple first meal. We have two grocery stores nearby (K-Market and Sale), but check their closing times. A good approach is to buy basics on the way, then shop properly the next day. Our guide on the first evening arrival checklist is helpful.
What if the weather or the road is bad?
Winter weather can slow or cancel a journey. Do not drive tired or in poor conditions. If you run late or need to change plans, message us on WhatsApp at wa.me/358503317619. Our posts on delayed or cancelled flights and on changing or extending a booking explain what to do.
Compare with landing at Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi airport is about 15 minutes by car from the apartment, and a taxi costs roughly €35–45. That is by far the simplest option, so compare the real total cost of the alternative, including the road leg, rental or transfer, and the extra hours, before choosing a cheaper flight. Our guide airport to apartment shows the standard route.
Checklist if you land elsewhere
- Confirm the road leg and who drives.
- Check winter tyres, child seats and fuel.
- Tell us your expected arrival time.
- Download maps for offline use.
- Keep warm clothing in the car, not in the boot.
A realistic plan for a family of six to nine
Suppose a group of eight lands at Oulu in the early afternoon. They collect luggage, pick up two rental cars or a larger vehicle, and set off for Rovaniemi with a break halfway. They aim to arrive after dark with a margin for weather. On arrival, they find the lockbox, take their boots off at the door, and put the kettle on. The next morning they shop for groceries and begin the holiday properly. In this plan, the road leg is treated as part of the trip, not as an obstacle, and the check-in is not the stressful step.
A different group may prefer to spend one night near the airport they land at, then drive in daylight the next day. That adds a night of cost, but it can be calmer for tired children. Whichever you choose, tell us your expected arrival time and any change as early as you can.
Questions to ask the rental company
Ask whether the car has winter tyres and what to do in a breakdown, whether a one-way hire fee applies, how many large suitcases the boot takes with a roof box, and what the fuel policy is. For a group of nine, you may need two vehicles, which affects parking: we have one free parking space in the yard next to the entrance, so plan where the second car will go and read two cars and one parking space.
