Staying in Rovaniemi in January: Daylight, Cold and What to Book First
January in Rovaniemi: short daylight, deep snow and calm streets. What to expect, pack and book first for a winter stay.

Staying in Rovaniemi in January means deep winter: reliable snow, cold that you plan around rather than ignore, and very short daylight at the start of the month that slowly lengthens as it goes on. It is a quieter, calmer month than Christmas, with fewer crowds in most places, and a good one for a family who wants snow without the peak-week rush. This guide covers what to expect for a stay, what to pack and what to book first.
We are Joona and Alla, hosts of a family apartment in Korkalovaara, and we live in Rovaniemi through every month of the year. Here is how January looks from the front door.
What is January like in Rovaniemi?
Cold, snowy and dark in the early weeks. Typical January temperatures sit well below freezing, and cold snaps colder than −20 °C happen in most winters, so check the forecast just before you fly and pack for the cold end of the range. Daylight is limited at the start of the month, with the sun low or barely visible and long stretches of blue twilight. By the end of January the days are noticeably longer, and you will feel the difference within a week or two.
The low light has an upside. It is the season when the sky stays dark for much of the day, which gives you more chances for northern lights in the evening, and Korkalovaara, being a residential hill away from the centre’s lights, tends to be darker than downtown. On a strong night the aurora shows from our yard. We wrote about how to plan for that in choosing a Rovaniemi apartment for aurora season.
Is January busy or quiet?
Busy at the very start, quieter afterwards. The days around New Year are in demand, so accommodation for those dates sells out well ahead. Once the holiday rush passes, the month settles down. If your dates are flexible, the middle and end of January are often easier to book than December. We cannot promise specific prices, because ours are dynamic, but the pattern of demand is consistent from year to year, and it is worth watching the live dates on Airbnb or Booking.com.
What to book first
Book in this order, because the early items fill up first:
- Your accommodation. Group-sized places go first, especially for a family of six or more.
- Flights and any airport transfer. Our guide to the airport to apartment options explains taxi, bus and rental car. A taxi from the airport to Nine Pines is about 15 minutes and roughly €35–45.
- Winter activities. Popular tours with small groups fill up in winter. Guests who stay with us get 5 % off through our guest activities page with the code NINEPINES5.
- A rental car, only if you want one. Many families manage with the bus and the odd taxi, as we describe in Rovaniemi without a car.
What to look for in an apartment in January
Winter changes what matters in a rental. In July you hardly think about drying clothes; in January it decides how the whole trip runs.
- A dryer. Snowsuits, mittens and thermal layers get wet daily. At Nine Pines the washing machine and tumble dryer are in the apartment, so snowsuits go in after dinner and are dry by morning.
- Parking you can reach. We provide one free parking space in the yard beside the entrance, plus an ice scraper and a snow brush. We explain why that matters in winter parking in Rovaniemi.
- A warm entrance and space for boots. Look for a hallway with wardrobes and room to sit and dress children. Ours has wardrobes in every room, including the hallway.
- A kitchen. After a cold day, hot soup at your own table beats queueing for a restaurant table with tired children.
What to pack for a stay in January
You will wear more than you pack, so layers matter more than bulk. A base layer, a warm middle layer and a windproof outer layer cover most days. Warm boots with room for thick socks, a hat that covers the ears, and mittens rather than gloves make a bigger difference than a fancy jacket. Many tour operators lend thermal overalls and boots on activity days, so ask before you buy anything. Our guest guide has a packing list by season.
Daily rhythm for a winter stay
The families who enjoy January most tend to pace the day around the light. Go out in the lighter hours, come back for a late lunch or warm drink, and keep the evening for the aurora or an early night. The apartment becomes a proper base rather than somewhere you just sleep: a kitchen to cook in, a balcony to check the sky from, a sofa where everybody can sit together. Forest trails for walking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing start a few minutes from our door, and there is sledging on the Korkalovaara hills; ask us and we will lend a sledge.
Staying in the centre or outside it?
January is the month when a quiet location pays off, because your evenings are long and dark. A place away from the centre gives you darker skies and peace after a full day. A central place gives you shorter walks to restaurants. We weigh those honestly in where to stay in Rovaniemi: the main areas compared.
FAQ
Is January a good time to visit Rovaniemi with children?
Yes, if your children are comfortable in the cold and you dress them in proper layers. Snow is reliable and the pace is calmer than around Christmas. Plan shorter outdoor sessions with warm breaks.
Can I see the northern lights in January?
The dark evenings give good opportunities, but the aurora depends on solar activity and clear skies, so nobody can promise it. Staying somewhere with darker skies helps.
How cold does it get?
Often well below freezing, with occasional colder spells. Check the forecast before departure and pack for the colder end.
Do I need to book far ahead for January?
For New Year dates, yes. For mid and late January, booking a few weeks to months ahead is usually enough, but larger group apartments go first.
