The First Week of February 2027 in Rovaniemi: A Self-Catering Apartment Week
Monday 1 to Sunday 7 February 2027: why early February is a good week for a Rovaniemi apartment, with a sample plan.

The first week of February 2027, Monday 1 to Sunday 7 February, is a very good week to book a Rovaniemi apartment if you want deep winter without the Christmas crowds. The holiday rush is long over, the cold is dependable, the sky is dark enough for northern lights on clear nights, and daylight is already lengthening. You can check live dates for those seven nights on Airbnb or Booking.com.
We host families and groups in Korkalovaara and this is how we would plan that week if we were booking it ourselves. We do not quote prices, because they change by date, but we can tell you what the week is like and what to settle first.
What the first week of February is like in Rovaniemi
By early February the town has settled into its quiet winter rhythm. Snow cover is normally good, the daylight is far longer than in December, and temperatures can range from mild-for-Lapland to properly cold. Our February guide covers the month as a whole, and the post on daylight from February to April shows how fast the light returns.
Because this is not a public-holiday period, the town is calmer than at Christmas or New Year. That is useful when you are travelling with a group of eight or nine and want to move around without queues. It does not mean everything is empty: February is a popular month for visitors who prefer snow to darkness, and the school-holiday weeks later in the month are busier. See Finnish winter holiday weeks for the pattern.
Why book this week rather than a holiday week
- More choice of dates. It is normally easier to find a suitable apartment for a larger group outside the Christmas fortnight.
- Calmer evenings. The quiet hours in our building are 22:00–07:00, and it is easy to keep to them when the town itself is calm.
- Good conditions. Snow is usually well established, and dark evenings still give aurora chances.
- Easy logistics. Buses and shops run on their normal timetables, which makes a stay without a car straightforward.

Monday 1 February: arrive and settle
Check-in is from 16:00 via a code lockbox, also late at night. Shop for the first dinner and breakfast, then leave wet boots in the hallway and put gloves in the dryer. Our first 30 minutes after check-in guide helps you settle in quickly.
Tuesday to Thursday: outdoor days with a rest day built in
Keep one afternoon free. Children and adults tire quickly in cold weather, and a calm afternoon at the apartment makes the next day better. The forest trails are a few minutes from the door, and the Korkalovaara hills are good for sledging (ask us for a sledge). For guided activities, see our guest activities page, where guests get 5 % off with the code NINEPINES5.
Friday and Saturday: aurora nights
Aurora cannot be promised on any particular night; it depends on solar activity and clear sky. Korkalovaara has darker skies than the centre, and on a strong night it shows from the yard. See our northern lights night routine for how to stay warm and keep kids happy.
Sunday 7 February: departure day
Plan packing the night before, especially if you have an early flight. Our early flight checklist saves stress.
Is February too cold for children?
Children cope well with the cold when they are dressed correctly and can warm up regularly. The apartment is the warm-up point: a tumble dryer for gloves, a kitchen for hot drinks, and wardrobes in every room. Read our guide on staying with a baby or toddler if you have very young children; a baby cot is free on request.
Apartment or hotel for a February week
For one or two adults, a hotel can work. For six to nine people, an apartment is more practical: one kitchen, three bedrooms, a washer and dryer, and free parking for a car with a roof box. Our post on hotel or apartment by group size gives a quick decision table.
Booking tips for 1–7 February
- Enter seven nights with the full guest count.
- Check the same dates on both platforms and compare the final total.
- Choose a flexible rate if possible.
- Ask us about the airport transfer; a taxi takes about 15 minutes and costs roughly €35–45.
The apartment page, Nine Pines, has the room details, and the location page lists distances: 8 minutes by car to the centre, 15 minutes to Santa Claus Village, SantaPark and the airport, and 10 minutes to the Ounasvaara slopes.
Packing for early February
February in Rovaniemi can be anywhere from a few degrees below freezing to properly cold, so pack in layers: thermal base, fleece, insulated outer layer, windproof shell, warm boots, hats and two pairs of gloves per person. The washing machine and tumble dryer in the apartment mean you can pack for four days rather than seven and wash mid-week. Wet gloves in the dryer after dinner are dry by morning, which is the single biggest comfort gain for families with children. Our winter packing guide goes into detail, and the laundry routine for a family shows how to use the machines efficiently.
Camera and phone batteries drain faster in the cold, so keep them in an inside pocket and charge them every night; see camera and phone batteries in the cold.
