Staying in Rovaniemi in November: Weather, Daylight and What to Book First
Rovaniemi in November: short days, first snow, quieter streets. A local host's guide to weather, packing and what to arrange before you arrive.

November is Rovaniemi’s in-between month. The leaves are gone, the snow is arriving, daylight is shrinking fast, and the town is quieter than it will be in December. If you want snow, dark skies and fewer crowds, it can be a good month to stay; if you want a guaranteed white landscape and Christmas lights everywhere, it may be too early.
We live in Rovaniemi and host guests all year, so here is what we tell people who ask about November.
What is the weather like in Rovaniemi in November?
Expect cold, damp and changeable. Early November can still be grey and slushy, with snow arriving and sometimes melting again. By late November, it is more likely to stay. Temperatures are usually below freezing, though how far below varies a lot from year to year. We would not promise snow on any given date, and neither should anyone else.
Plan for rain or sleet as well as snow in the first half of the month. Waterproof boots matter more than the thickest coat.
How much daylight is there?
Days shorten quickly through November. By the end of the month there are only a few hours of proper daylight. The sun is low, light is soft, and the blue hour feels long. Plan outdoor activities for the middle of the day and keep evenings for the apartment, the sauna or the northern lights.
Because the days are short, a place to rest between outings matters more than in summer. Having your own kitchen and living room, rather than a hotel room, makes the dark afternoons comfortable.
Can you see the northern lights in November?
It is possible. Dark skies and long nights give you more chances than in September, but the lights depend on solar activity and clear skies, so nobody can promise them. In Korkalovaara, away from the brightest city lights, the aurora can show from the yard on a strong night, which is part of why guests like it here. We cannot promise it, and we would not want you to book on that promise alone.
Is Rovaniemi open in November?
Yes. It is not as busy as December, and some seasonal activities may be starting up as snow arrives. Check opening times for specific tours and attractions before you travel, as dates vary. The shops, supermarkets, restaurants and buses run normally. Wherever you plan to go, it is worth checking current hours before you travel.
What should you pack for a stay in November?
Layers. A thermal base, a warm mid-layer, a waterproof and windproof outer layer, a hat, gloves, and boots with grip. Bring microspikes or ice grips if you are sensitive to slippery pavements. A headtorch is useful for walks in the forest after dark. For a longer list, our guest guide has a packing list by season.
Plan on washing. Wet clothes are the main practical issue of the month, so a washer and dryer helps. At Nine Pines, both are in the apartment.
What is it like to stay in an apartment in November?
November evenings are made for being indoors. Cook dinner, put the clothes in the dryer, and spend the evening on the sofa. You are not fighting for a restaurant table or travelling back to a hotel in the dark. Our kitchen has a dishwasher, oven, microwave, coffee machine and kettle, and there are two grocery stores nearby.
What should you book first?
Accommodation, then flights, then any activities with limited slots. November is generally calmer than December, but the last week can get busy as Christmas approaches. If you want a specific tour or a private sauna, check availability early; the guest activities page shows what we can arrange, with 5 % off for our guests using the code NINEPINES5.
Is November good for families?
It can be. The pace is slower, which suits small children. But if your children are set on snowmen and sledging, check the forecast closer to the date. Korkalovaara has hills for sledging and forest trails a few minutes away; if snow has arrived, ask us for a sledge.
Is November a good month for working remotely or a longer stay?
For some people, yes. It is quieter, the days are short so you do not feel guilty about staying in, and the evenings are good for working. Fast Wi-Fi is the first thing to check, and a place to sit that is not a bed. If you are thinking of two or more weeks, tell us your dates and what you need, and we will give you a straight answer on whether Nine Pines fits.
A realistic first day
Arrive, check in with the code, put the kettle on, and walk to the nearest shop for basics. Get the outer clothes sorted and unpacked. Take an early evening walk on the forest trails near the apartment if conditions allow, then cook something simple. The next day you will be better placed to decide what to do. Short days are easier when you do not try to do too much on the first one.
