Thanksgiving Week in Rovaniemi: Cooking Dinner in an Apartment

Thanksgiving falls on 26 November 2026. How to cook a family dinner in a Rovaniemi apartment kitchen, what to shop for and how to plan around one oven.

Spending Thanksgiving week in Rovaniemi is entirely possible, and a self-catering apartment is the easiest way to do it. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November in 2026, and it is not a Finnish holiday, so shops, buses and supermarkets run as normal while you cook. Check live dates on Airbnb or Booking.com if you are thinking of that week, then use the notes below. We are Joona and Alla, a Finnish-based host couple, and we have written this for families from the US and Canada who want a real dinner on the day.

Is Thanksgiving week a good time to visit Rovaniemi?

It sits at the start of the festive season, when the days are short and the town is preparing for December. Expect cold, dark afternoons and a calm atmosphere. Our month guide on staying in Rovaniemi in November explains what the month is like from an accommodation point of view, and daylight by month helps you plan outdoor time around the light.

Because many travellers book Christmas first, a late-November week can be easier to plan than December. We cannot promise availability, so look at the live calendar for your exact dates. If you are travelling from North America, our guide to booking from the USA, Canada or Australia covers flights, time difference and arrival.

Can you really cook a Thanksgiving dinner in a Rovaniemi apartment?

Yes, with realistic expectations. The kitchen at Nine Pines is fully equipped for nine, with a dishwasher, oven, microwave, coffee machine and kettle, and the dining table seats six. That is enough for a proper family meal, but we recommend planning a scaled version of the classic menu: a turkey breast or a whole chicken rather than a very large bird, a few side dishes that can share oven time, and desserts that need no baking on the day.

We cannot tell you what any particular supermarket has in stock on a given day, and it is sensible not to assume that a specific turkey, canned pumpkin or cranberry sauce will be available. Instead, check labels and ask in the store, and bring any ingredient that matters to you. Our posts on bringing food into Finland and Finnish supermarket chains will help you set realistic expectations.

How do you plan the meal around one oven?

The key is to think in oven slots. One oven means one temperature at a time, so choose dishes that can cook together. A common approach is roasting the main dish first, resting it while sides go in, and using the microwave and stovetop for vegetables and gravy. Make dessert the day before or choose something served cold. Our guide on cooking for nine with one oven includes a timing plan, and the metric measures and Celsius temperatures are worth a glance before you start in a Finnish kitchen, since American recipes use cups and Fahrenheit.

What should you shop for, and where?

There are two grocery stores in the neighbourhood: a K-Market and a Sale. For a larger shop, the centre is 8 minutes away by car. Make a list before you leave home, convert measures in advance, and do the main shop two days before Thanksgiving, which leaves time to find substitutes. Remember that Finnish shops have specific opening hours on Sundays; our note on Sunday evening shopping explains what to expect. Also check the Finnish bottle deposit system if you buy drinks, described in our post on pantti.

How do you make the day feel like Thanksgiving?

Small things do it: a tablecloth, candles, a playlist and a shared walk before dinner. Korkalovaara has forest trails a few minutes from the apartment, and a walk in the cold followed by a hot kitchen suits the season well. After dinner, the dishwasher takes the strain. If the group includes children, colouring books are available, and a baby cot is free on request.

If you are travelling with relatives, our posts on family reunions and grandparents and grandchildren cover seating, stairs and sleeping arrangements. Note that the apartment is on the second floor with no lift.

What is a sensible timeline for the week?

Work backwards from Thursday. Two days before: do the main grocery shop and put everything away. The day before: prepare what can be made ahead, set the table and check that you have the dishes, glasses and serving pieces you need. On the day: start in the morning, keep the oven plan on a piece of paper on the fridge, and plan a walk in the middle of the afternoon while things rest. After dinner, load the dishwasher, then enjoy the evening without anyone having to leave the building. If you want a quieter plan, order or buy part of the meal ready-made and cook only the main dish.

Remember the quiet hours of 22:00 to 07:00 in the building, so plan the music and the conversation accordingly, and keep the group to the maximum of nine guests.

Which week of the trip works best?

If you are going to Rovaniemi for the US holiday week, you have two broad choices. Arrive before Thanksgiving and cook on the day, or arrive after it and treat the holiday as a travel day. Cooking in the apartment is easier if you arrive at least a day before, so the shopping is done and the lockbox check-in (from 16:00, any hour) is behind you. A taxi from the airport takes roughly 15 minutes and costs about €35–45.

FAQ: Thanksgiving in a Rovaniemi apartment

Is Thanksgiving a holiday in Finland?

Is the oven big enough for a whole turkey?
