Diwali Week in Rovaniemi 2026: A Self-Catering Apartment for a Big Family

Spending Diwali on Sunday 8 November 2026 in Rovaniemi? Why a self-catering apartment suits a family celebration, and what to plan.

Dining table set for six at Nine Pines

If your family celebrates Diwali on Sunday 8 November 2026 and wants to spend it in Rovaniemi, a self-catering apartment with a full kitchen and a big table is the easiest way to keep the celebration your own. You can cook what you want, when you want, and nobody needs a reservation. This is a practical guide from a Rovaniemi host, not a guide to the festival itself.

We are not experts on the religious side of Diwali, and we would not pretend to be. What we can say is what the apartment and the town offer for a group planning a family celebration abroad. We never quote prices, so check live dates on Airbnb or Booking.com.

Why choose an apartment for a festival week

Hotel breakfasts and restaurant dinners are fixed to someone else’s timetable. A family celebration usually is not. In an apartment, you can prepare dishes together, eat when the children are ready, and invite relatives to sit around one table without asking anyone’s permission. A kitchen is also useful for dietary rules; our post on vegetarian and vegan self-catering in Rovaniemi and the one on allergies and special diets will help.

The kitchen at Nine Pines

Nine Pines is a three-bedroom family home of 103 m² on a single floor. The kitchen has a dishwasher, an oven, a microwave, a coffee machine and a kettle, and the dining table seats six. That is enough for a proper family dinner, though for a larger group you may eat in turns or use the living room. We do not claim to have a specialist cooking range or particular cookware, so bring any special equipment you consider essential, such as a pressure cooker or a particular pan, and check with us before you travel about what the kitchen contains.

Cooking smells and ventilation

Strong cooking is a normal part of life in many households, but in a Finnish apartment building neighbours share walls and stairwells. Use the kitchen ventilation, keep doors closed, and open a window for a short time at the end rather than for hours. Our guide to fresh air and windows in a Finnish winter explains the balance.

Lamps, diyas and candles

Many families light lamps for Diwali. In a rental, please follow the rules for open flames; our post on candles and fairy lights in a Rovaniemi rental sets them out, and LED lamps are a safe alternative. Fireworks and sparklers should not be used in or around the building.

Buying food in Rovaniemi

You can buy staples in Finnish supermarkets. The range of South Asian ingredients is more limited than in a large city, so if you rely on particular spices, flours or sweets, consider bringing them. Check the rules for food imports before you travel; see bringing food into Finland. We have two grocery stores near the apartment, K-Market and Sale. For wider options, read our guide to Finnish supermarkets.

Sunday 8 November: what to plan

8 November is a Sunday, and Sunday opening hours in Finland are limited, so do your food shopping on Friday or Saturday. Our post on Sunday evening shopping in Rovaniemi explains the pattern. Daylight is short in early November, and there may be snow or only frost, so wear warm clothing even for a short walk.

Sleeping and space

The apartment sleeps up to nine: a 160 cm double bed, two rooms with two 90 cm single beds, and a sofa bed and armchair bed in the living room. Wardrobes in every room make unpacking easy. There is one bathroom with a shower and a separate second toilet. A baby cot is free on request, and we have colouring books for children.

Fitting in with the building

Quiet hours are 22:00–07:00 and the maximum is nine guests. Parties are not allowed, so a Diwali dinner with the family staying is fine, but a large gathering with extra visitors is not. Read the rules about visitors before you invite anyone. A sensible plan is to celebrate at the table, keep the music low in the evening, and tell us if you want to arrange a special surprise.

Getting here and around

The airport is about 15 minutes by car, and taxis cost roughly €35–45. In Korkalovaara the nearest bus stop is 150 m away. Santa Claus Village is 15 minutes by car. For details see our location page.

A small checklist for a Diwali trip

  1. Book the apartment with enough beds for everyone.
  2. Decide who cooks and what ingredients to bring.
  3. Pack warm layers and sturdy boots.
  4. Do the main shopping before Sunday.
  5. Message us with questions about the kitchen.

Sharing the festival with children

For children, a trip to Lapland over Diwali week can be a lovely way to link two traditions: the lights of the festival and the winter darkness outside. In the apartment, children can help set the table, arrange LED lamps in the window and wear their festive clothes at home. Outside, they will need the full winter kit: boots, thermal layers, mittens and a warm hat. The tumble dryer takes care of damp gloves overnight, so they are ready again in the morning.

If you want to join a tour on another day, our guest activities page has options, and guests get 5 % off with the code NINEPINES5.

One last practical point: Finland has its own seasonal rhythm in early November, with early darkness and the first lasting snow arriving at different times each year. Pack for a range of conditions, from rain to deep frost, so that your plans are not disrupted by weather.
